Enable iCloud Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. This keeps full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud while using space-saving copies on your iPhone when needed. Before changing settings, confirm your library has finished syncing and that you have enough iCloud storage; deleting photos while iCloud Photos is enabled deletes them from other devices using the same Apple Account.
First, distinguish iPhone storage from iCloud storage
iPhone device storage is the space built into your phone. iCloud storage is separate cloud storage used for photos, files, notes, and other data. Freeing iPhone storage does not automatically increase your iCloud capacity, and using iCloud Photos requires enough iCloud storage for your full-resolution photo and video collection.
Use Optimize iPhone Storage for photos
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, turn on Sync this iPhone, and select Optimize iPhone Storage. With this setting enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, while the iPhone keeps space-saving copies when necessary. Allow your photos and videos to finish uploading before relying on cloud-stored originals.
Safety checklist before changing photo settings
Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see which categories and apps use space. Confirm that iCloud has sufficient capacity and that your photo library has finished syncing. Do not treat deleting a photo in the Photos app as a local-only cleanup: with iCloud Photos enabled, deleting a photo or video also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Free more device space without deleting photos
Review the recommendations and per-app usage shown under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Offload unused apps when you want to remove the app itself while retaining its documents and data. Deleting an app has a different consequence because it removes the app and related data. You can also review downloaded files and media, as well as duplicate photos, but check each action to determine whether it affects only local storage or removes synced content.
Be careful with Remove from iPhone and turning off iCloud Photos
Turning off iCloud Photos is not the same as enabling Optimize iPhone Storage. When iCloud Photos is turned off for a device, choosing Remove from iPhone removes the photos from that iPhone without saving a copy there; choosing to download originals has the opposite effect on local storage. These options should not be treated as interchangeable, so verify the choice before confirming it.
