How Do I Change My Address With USPS After Moving?

Information current as of 09/17/2026.

Submit a USPS Change of Address request through the official USPS Movers Guide or at a Post Office using PS Form 3575. Choose permanent forwarding for a move without a planned return, or temporary forwarding for a relocation lasting from 15 days up to 1 year. Enter your old and new addresses, select a forwarding start date, complete identity verification, and save your confirmation code.

How to submit a USPS Change of Address

  1. Open the official USPS Movers Guide or USPS mail-forwarding page, or visit a Post Office.
  2. Select a permanent or temporary Change of Address.
  3. Choose whether the request is for an individual, family, or business.
  4. Provide your old mailing address, new mailing address, and forwarding start date.
  5. Complete the required identity verification. Online requests use USPS identity verification; in-person requests can use PS Form 3575 with valid identification.
  6. Review the confirmation and keep the confirmation code for future changes or cancellation.

Choose permanent or temporary forwarding

Use a permanent COA when you are moving and do not plan to return to the original address. Use a temporary COA for a relocation lasting from 15 days up to 1 year. USPS says a permanent COA generally forwards primarily First-Class Mail for 12 months and Periodicals for 60 days, so forwarding does not cover every mail type indefinitely.

When forwarded mail should begin arriving

Forwarded mail generally begins arriving at the new address within 7–10 postal business days after the COA start date. Because some mail types, sender instructions, and marketing mail may not be forwarded automatically, update important senders directly as well. A USPS COA changes the mailing address used by USPS; it does not independently update every sender’s records.

Manage the order after submitting it

To modify or cancel a COA online, use USPS Manage My Move with the confirmation code associated with the order and the new ZIP Code. Keep the confirmation information after submitting the request. If you lose the confirmation code, USPS advises visiting a Post Office for assistance.

Update important senders separately

After submitting the COA, directly update organizations and senders that need your permanent address, including banks, employers, government agencies, insurers, subscription providers, and other important contacts. USPS forwarding is not a substitute for changing those records.
