Food buildup around the splash baffle or inside the grind chamber commonly causes garbage-disposal odors. Turn off the disposal and disconnect its power before manual cleaning, then clean the baffle and upper chamber lip, use the model-supported baking-soda method, and flush with cold water. Never put your hands inside the disposal or use bleach, chemical drain cleaners, grease, or fat; follow your owner’s manual if it differs.
1. Disconnect power before cleaning
Turn off the garbage disposal and disconnect its power supply before reaching through the sink opening, removing an accessible splash baffle, or manually cleaning any part. Never place your hands inside the disposal. If a visible object needs removal after power is disconnected, use tongs or needle-nose pliers instead.
2. Clean the splash baffle and upper chamber lip
Food residue commonly collects under the splash baffle and around the upper lip of the grind chamber. Clean those accessible areas with a scouring pad as part of the baking-soda cleaning procedure. Do not assume every baffle is removable or dishwasher-safe; use the instructions for your model.
3. Use the manufacturer-supported baking-soda method
For the reviewed InSinkErator procedure, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with water and use the disposal to wash away loose particles. Restore power only according to your model’s instructions, and run cold water during the disposal’s operation. The owner’s manual controls if its procedure differs from this general guidance.
4. Freshen the disposal only with a model-compatible option
The reviewed InSinkErator manual identifies citrus peels as an option for freshening the smell. InSinkErator also describes placing ice cubes mixed with lemon or lime wedges into the disposal under a medium stream of cold water. Treat these as model-compatible options, not universal instructions, and do not use them in place of the power-off step for manual cleaning.
5. Prevent odors and avoid unsafe cleaners
Run cold water while the disposal is grinding and continue running it for at least 15 seconds after grinding. Avoid putting grease, oil, or fatty foods into the disposal. Do not use bleach, chemical drain openers, or other unapproved drain-cleaning products, and do not assume hot-water guidance applies while grinding.
6. Check drainage if the smell persists
If the disposal continues to smell, check whether it is draining properly. Slow or poor drainage may be associated with noticeable odor. Consult the owner’s manual or model-specific support if the unit drains poorly or its cleaning instructions differ.
